but procrastinating is easy
So now my problem is do I go with my first idea and write the scene as flashbacky to Nat's conversation with her father, or do I just write it as her explaining to Guy, which is all very "tell not show" and the number one no-no.

And I'm still debating whether her other option is Luke or someone random. Luke makes more sense....

"... And that is why I need you to marry me."

That doesn't sound so bad.

Why wouldn't she want to marry Luke?

Because he's not Asch, and because he's in love with someone else. But marrying him maintains the royal bloodline, which is why I figure the Council or whoever wouldn't really care about anything except keeping the bloodline going.

Right. I knew that.

Umm... Guy's blood meets the Council's requirements?

For my plot purposes, whether it makes any sense or not, I've decided she'll be given the chance to choose someone herself, but if she doesn't, the council will.

He's half-Kimlascan, and I think it would be a way to make amends for the shit way his family was treated, yeah.

That sounds good.

Council: "Here's what we need. You're free to marry whoever within these limitations."

Natalia: "This is a mighty short list."

Council: *Whistles*

Marrying Guy would have great diplomatic boons; a healing gesture and a guarantee of peace between the two historically hostile Kingdoms. You might find a some inspiration from Queen Victoria's marriage with Prince Albert; they married at the age Guy and Natalia are. Albert is from a German Duchy, though a rivalry would not come about for another 50 years.

The fact that they're 1st cousins is incidental.

It was left out of the anime, but in a game side-event, Kimlasca's General Cecille (Guy's cousin on his mother's side) wanted to marry Malkuth's General Frings, and it was said that this would be a good way to symbolize the peace. But then he died, so yeah.

I figure this would be a good do-over both as a peace gesture and restoring the honor/standing of the Cecille family.

And, yeah, it's not like royal marriages for alliance building/strengthening is a new concept.

It's important to distinguish the interests involved: The Council and the politicians will certain think of this union as a good do-over with only Pros and no Cons.

Guy and Natalia may even agree with this assessment, but they're the ones whose asses are on the line. Even if they're close friends, marriage and all that comes with it must be somewhat daunting.

Looking forward to how you do it; personally, because the stereotype is that arranged/political/society-mandated marriages are inevitably loveless, cold, polite, and miserable for the couple involved, I very much like to write about political marriages which end up being affectionate, happy, and even passionate.

That's why this definitely is kind of a daunting project for me, if I go through with it. There's the relationship angle, but then there's the political angle, and I wouldn't want it to be all super-easy. I'd have to figure out the political ramifications/subplot as well as the awkward friends-to-married thing. It's a lot to plot out.

Don't think too big and scare yourself: The readership (and what you're more interested in, I presume) is here for the Guy/Nat. So focus on the awkward friends-to-married thing. You can address Abyss-verse politics and diplomatic subplot, but you're not writing Dune.

Focus on the relationship; let the politics be in the background where it belongs.

Sure, I just don't want it to come across as, "And voila, peace is just that simple", since there's bound to be a lot of lingering distrust on both sides, especially among the older people who remember the years and years of bad.

I want to focus on their relationship, definitely. I just worry about it being yet another shallow ship fic when there are a lot of interesting issues that would realistically come with this pair. So it's just some stuff for me to think about.

Also, for the future:

While Natalia has Asch/Luke, Guy has no comparable girl in his life who might in any way make Natalia feel insecure. In other words, Natalia has no competition. Even the perception of competition on Natalia's part may help flesh out your portrayals of Guy/Nat in the future.

I was thinking about that the other day, actually, and going with canon characters, I'd probably do something with Noelle. She and Guy have the whole gearhead thing in common, and Natalia might feel left out if she's not interested in his number one obsession hobby.
cal_reflector From: cal_reflector Date: April 22nd, 2010 09:26 pm (UTC) (Link)
I think you could even make it more than feeling left out: Girlfriend disgruntled with WOW-obsessed boyfriend is one thing. Girl disgruntled with boyfriend who spends all his time playing WOW with another girl who is equally obsessed with WOW is something else entirely.

At some point, Natalia has to wonder which Guy finds more engrossing; the mechanical tinkering or the cute hobby partner whom he shares his passion with.
