your smile and the sound of your voice and the way you see through me
She thought he would laugh with her, but he didn’t. “It’s good to see your smile again,” he said.

“Don’t I often smile?” Her innocent tone would have fooled most people, but he wasn’t most people. “What good is a sour-faced princess?”

“Sometimes I think you smile for everyone but yourself.”

You know, it sounds like a good line as long as you don't think about it. Then it doesn't make sense.

I officially have four different things started now. I keep switching between them, hoping one of them will work so eventually I'll have something good enough to post somewhere it might actually get read.

Unrelated:

BTW, my first impression was that it was Guy and Natalia. It was only by the third reading that Touya and Tomoyo came to mind, so you're doing it right.

Yeah, I suppose you could fit Tomoyo into that. What's great about Guy is he is tons more open than Touya is. He's much more likely to just come out and say something, especially, "Oh, here's more about my tragic past you might not know". Plus the sweet-talking. Touya's not gonna sit there giving out compliments like candy.

Very true. Touya is much more introverted than Guy, at least until the relationship is consummated. Tomoyo is much more roundabout and subtle than Natalia, albeit both are similar in that they're reluctant to show weakness/neediness.

Yeah, I think when Touya's in a relationship and feels secure, then he's privately sweet and affectionate, but in general, he's not going to talk to people he doesn't have to. He's got exactly one friend. He only ever has one friend, and he ends up dating that friend, because then he doesn't have to bother with anyone else.

Natalia also admits she has a lot to learn and some growing up to do, whereas Tomoyo... well, is ten, but seems to have been born knowing everything.

Tomoyo is sweet and understanding and knows everything about everyone... except herself. Selfless people who don't spend much time thinking about themselves may end up in a conundrum when romance (inherently selfish activity) strikes.

Natalia's attitude towards Romance is foreign to me. She had an arranged marriage from birth and in truth she has never had to go through the process of romance or thinking seriously about the matter.

I don't know if I ever actually wrote about it or just thought about it, but I had this idea that Tomoyo's love is kind of a selfish and safe thing, because when you love someone who doesn't feel the same way, and you say you're happy with that, then you don't really have to put yourself out there and risk anything and actually be in a relationship where you might have to make hard decisions. I always meant to write something about that.

Natalia's turning out to be more complex than I want her to be, which is going to cause problems when all I want is to write some good G/N fluff. Because you're right--her feelings for Asch are something that she's not had to think about, so developing feelings for someone else is going to be a completely new experience for her.

Developing feelings for someone else... if I recall, that was the part (particularly in the beginning) you were dissatisfied with in Shadows.

A different take on Touya-Tomoyo then, by that view, would be if Touya reciprocates what she thought was a safe, one-sided crush and takes Tomoyo off guard.

Have fun with both.

Shoot, I've been dissatisfied with the beginning of Shadows for a lot of reasons. The characterization is off (Tomoyo's too moody, Touya's too flaky), the interaction is way forced, and I clearly didn't have a plan in place. I just kept throwing spaghetti at the wall until something stuck.

I'm going to do one-shotters for this G/N stuff, because the multi-chapter thing is too much an albatross for me.
