So, Sims 3. I've finally had time to just sit down and play for a few hours.

I have a couple of minor quibbles with it. The fact that a household no longer stays in stasis when you switch to another household takes getting used to. But sometimes if a Sim is doing something, they'll get stuck that way, and if your active Sim calls or invites them over, they won't talk or come over. You have to switch back to the other household and make them stop. I guess this is a bug? Or else I'm doing something wrong. Like, NataliaSim was stuck working at her computer, GuySim was stuck at a chess table in the park, and TouyaSim was stuck looking through the telescope. On the plus side, when I made TouyaSim the active Sim again, all that time he'd been stuck at the telescope meant he'd maxed out the Logic skill. Which is good for his job.

And I'm having trouble getting romances going. GuySim and NataliaSim got on like a house afire, but no one else can seem to get beyond friendship no matter how much flirting and hugging and woohooing. I guess I have to keep after it. I think it would be hilarious to hook up TouyaSim and AniseSim.

Good things?

The personality traits. I love them. I love how you can get some specific activities with certain traits. AniseSim is Frugal, so she clips coupons. FujitakaSim is a Bookworm, so he joined a book club. TouyaSim is a Computer Whiz, so he can troll message boards (and gets a Moodlet Boost from it!).

And one thing I love is the writing skill. LukeSim is a novelist/journalist, and you actually get to title the books and articles, plus get copies of them for your bookshelf and the library so other Sims can read them. He wanted to write a SciFi novel, so I called it I, Replica. It flopped big time, so he got bitter and wrote a trashy bodice ripper called Common Princess, Noble Servant (and I made AschSim read it). Then he got over it and went back to SciFi with The Outer Lands, which was well-received. But I think my favorite part was when he went rummaging through his neighbors' trash for dirt for his articles, and he found a copy of I, Replica. Then TouyaSim, who's a cop, was also digging through the trash for evidence, and he found like three copies of I, Replica. So he gave one to FujitakaSim and one to SakuraSim.

The opportunities are great, too. It seems much easier to get promoted than before, because for Sims like AschSim who's a Loner, he doesn't need to have X number of friends/relationships to get promoted. He's already gotten to like Level 8 of the Medicine track.

And actually being able to go from place to place, to visit other Sims houses, go to the public pool or library or shops without having to sit through a loading screen is nice. It makes a much more fluid and interactive neighborhood that way. Going to other Sims' houses with the active Sim is one of the biggest improvements, I think.

I keep telling D, if he'll stop building and decorating his massive house and actually play the game, he'll like some of these new details. Of course, I have to stop playing long enough for him to have the disc.

The one thing that always turned me off of the other Sims games is the whole "you need 281 friendships to be promoted" because I hate the whole process of making my Sim JUST a friend with someone (but nothing more because it'll break up their relationship!) This was especially bad with the original Sims' deluxe edition, in which relationships deteriorated SO FAST. Two days and my couple would fall out of love if they didn't kiss a half-dozen times. Annoying!

It makes me want to play Sims 2 again, though, reading your post. It's been a while. Hmmm, I might have to get on that.

I've already had "X and Y are no longer friends" pop up because, between working and eating and sleeping and peeing, Sims just don't have time to maintain 100 friendships. Especially when you call one and they're like, "I can't talk now; call back in 8 hours". So that's still annoying, but at least it only seems important for increasing the Charisma skill and not job promotions as a whole.

I've been reading a lot of reviews of The Sims 3, and they basically say the same thing. Some really great stuff, but a lot of bugs.

Some great improvements, but yeah, needs a patch. I've had problems with it crashing about once a session, too.

Otherwise I'll have to justify why Touya seems to end up with girls much smaller and younger than him.

Eh, four years is about average as far as age differences go.

And the fun of Sims is seeing what odd pairings develop. Like, Fujitaka and Tear get along really well.

*Looks at Anise then Touya* Four years? Yeah right... but if AniseSim incorporates Hyde!Anise it'd be interesting.
