Damn, but "Prophecy Girl" is an excellent episode. If you didn't need some of the stuff leading up to it, I'd suggest anyone new start with this one.
When Buffy gives her "I'm only sixteen years old" line, D said, "Was this the point where we realized this show was something special?"
And we can't forget this:
Xander: I don't like you. At the end of the day, I pretty much think you're a vampire. But Buffy's got this big old yen for you. She thinks you're a real person. And right now I need you to prove her right.
Angel: You're in love with her.
Xander: Aren't you?
I love you, Xander. You have no superpowers, you're not the Chosen One, or a witch, or a Watcher, or an ex-demon.... but you will get in there and do what you have to do for the people you care about.
But I'd forgotten just how overt Xander's thing for Buffy was in the early days. I mean, I knew it was there, but there are a few times like in "Teacher's Pet" that I'd forgotten about.
And also how overt Willow's thing for Xander was, which just makes her later total "Gay Now!" stuff annoy me, and lines like "You were the biggest ladies' man in Sunnydale, Harris. I even went in for smoochies, and I don't truck with the stubbly crowd" are not just retcons but blatant f'ing lies. She didn't go in for smoochies because he was such a stud that even her being gay wasn't a barrier, but because SHE LOVED HIM. Dammit, Joss, this is why you piss me off. How can you write both the awesomeness of "Prophecy Girl" and the total suck of the Season Eight comics????
Anyway, we've got other stuff to watch next before we get to Season Two, but D's really looking forward to it. He says as little as he remembered the first season, he remembers even less about the second. Good times ahead!
