score one for my sister
We finally got around to seeing Tangled. We'd been avoiding it because the ads make it look Shrek-y. My sister said we had to see it because it was the best Disney movie ever, and while I don't agree to that extent, it was actually pretty good.

(Plus D said, "She also likes Twilight, so grain of salt.")

I could have sworn a few years ago that I'd read that they were returning to the story-book style 2D (similar to Sleeping Beauty) with this one. I mean, the animation was very nice, but I really prefer 2D and the hand-drawn look. It sucks that no one in Hollywood wants to do it anymore.

But for now, as for the last however many years, my favorite is still Sleeping Beauty. It's just gorgeous to look at, and Phillip is a total dream.

Current Music: the impression that I get--the mighty mighty bosstones

They WERE supposed to return to the 2D style, complete with painted backgrounds, but then decided not to. All the concept art was 2D and gorgeous. I'm not sure why they changed it.

Okay, good, I didn't make that up. I thought I remembered seeing some of the backgrounds.

LOVE Sleeping Beauty. The art style of that one is amazing. And the music. And the evil fairy is awesomely wicked.

I wish the American studios would go back to 2D animation too. I miss it. But all the kids love 3D now and that's what brings in the money. Art suffers for capitalism.

Ack, don't make me choose between art and capitalism! Why can't I have both?

What would have been coolest, I think, would be to draw everything 2D but keep the magical hair itself 3D, thus setting it apart from the rest of the world around it. It can work really well if it's done right; only the cyborg arm and leg were 3D in Treasure Planet, but the rest of the movie was 2D.

That might have worked. I just really miss the charm and soul of traditional animation. There's something kind of... sterile about the 3D.

is it sad that phillip is my ideal man?

i too am tired of 3d animation, and i'm glad i'm not the only one who didn't like shrek.

If that's sad, I'm sad with you. Phillip was the first prince to have a personality and actually do stuff. Plus, so pretty.

Shrek was awful. I think I laughed maybe twice.

I've heard some great stuff about Tangled so after you what said, I think I'd like watching it sometime.

Philip is super handsome but ermm the beast will always be my favourite hee.

I was afraid it was going to be one of those "look how hip and ironic we can be" things that seem to be the norm for animated movies these days, so I was pleasantly surprised to see very little of that. It was just a sweet story, and as usual, the animal sidekicks are pretty awesome.

Who doesn't love the Beast? Especially since he was a huge step up from Little Mermaid's Eric, who my sisters and I called "Prince Dorky Dork".
