D: When is my mom's birthday again?

He asks me this EVERY YEAR.

They're still not speaking, but he's bought her a card. He never does that, because we usually get together and go out to dinner or whatever. But this year he's mailing a card.

I'm staying out of it. I think they're both being unreasonably stubborn (they're a lot alike that way), but, for the record? He's more right than she is.

My dad and I don't exactly get along. Because we're too alike. It happens.

My mom and I didn't get along when I was a teenager. I don't know if it's growing up or moving away that made our relationship improve. Probably both. Whenever she tries to guilt me about moving back home, I know I'd rather be far away and get along than be constantly in each other's spaces and not getting along.

Some old people are just really stuck in their ways. I also heard from a co-worker of mine there's a chemical or something in your brain which gives you the ability to change and when you get older, you lose it. But I hope everything works out. It's great to hear your husband is mature about this.

They're definitely stuck and need hobbies or something. All my MIL and her husband do is watch the news, so when we get together they just rant and rave about politics. It's so tedious, and I usually stay out of the conversation and read instead.

Yes, hobbies are generally a good idea. I don't think politics is a healthy conversation topic unless you're a very open-minded person and you're willing to hear the other person's thoughts.
