“Do you think Natalia’s really going to marry Lord Boring Pants?”

Guy was more concerned about why the dinner’s seating arrangement had put him next to Anise. Every time she fidgeted in her chair, the sleeve of her gown would brush against his arm, or her foot would bump against his. When she’d lean forward, he had to look at the line of her neck or the curve of her ear, exposed by her upswept hair, and when she’d lean back, the demurely cut bodice of her gown would stretch tautly across her breasts. None of her motions were by accident, he was sure. So far she hadn’t attempted to feed him from her plate, but he didn’t know if that was because it hadn’t occurred to her or because they were still on the soup course.

“They really don’t suit,” she continued, “and she doesn’t look at all happy.”

There had been no official betrothal announcement, but things seemed headed that way for the princess and Lord Beauregard. Guy, forcing himself to pay attention to the head of the table, had to agree with Anise’s assessment. Natalia was wearing her diplomacy face as she talked to Beauregard. To outsiders she appeared pleasantly interested, but to those who knew her well, she also looked thoroughly unengaged. Beauregard was one of the former, nattering on and—if Natalia’s barely stifled yawn was any indication—earning his less than flattering nickname.

“She has to marry someone,” Guy said. They had that in common, though Natalia’s position was much worse than his. He only had to find a bride to provide him with an heir. She had to take politics and the future of her kingdom into account.

“Ugh, but Boring Pants?” Anise clucked and shook her head. “It’s like she went out and deliberately chose the most unchallenging suitor possible. What’s happened to our princess? She used to be so full of life. So adventurous.”

Natalia had never been the same since Asch died. She pretended, but her closest friends weren’t fooled for a second. The light had gone out of her eyes, the spark out of her spirit.

“Adventurous.” Anise repeated the word like she was tasting it, letting it slide over her lips and loll around her tongue. Too late Guy realized he was staring at her mouth as she did so. “Yeah. She needs adventure again. Excitement. Something new and different and a little bit wild.” A mischievous grin played at her lips as she sipped from her glass of red wine. “Maybe I’ll offer for her. We could be co-queens. No one could stop us.”

Somewhere, detached from everything, there was a part of him that knew it was their duty as Natalia’s friends to save her from becoming Princess Lady Boring Pants.

“Me and Natalia,” Anise said, almost purring with satisfaction at the thought. “Can’t you just imagine it?”

The rest of him was trying and failing not to do exactly that.

Dammit, and her arm brushed his again. He never thought he’d miss those old panic attacks, that perfect excuse to get away from her. It would cause a scene, but that couldn’t be worse than letting her stir things better left unstirred.

“Although, that wouldn’t solve the issue of Natalia needing to produce an heir,” Anise continued, so visibly oblivious to his discomfort that she had to be relishing it. Could no one else hear her? “Would you be a willing stud for us, Guy?” No, her voice was low and silky, pitched for his ears alone. “We’d make it worth your while.”

“That’s enough, Anise.” He bit out each word like he was chewing through old leather.

She gave him her most innocent expression, her brown eyes wide like the sweetest, most well-behaved puppy.

“I know you’re just trying to get a rise out of me.”

“Am I?” The innocence was replaced with a sly smile, and she glanced down at his lap. “Have I?”

“I get it, okay? Yeah, you’re all grown up now and can say shocking things. It’s getting old, Anise.”

She leaned close and put her lips to his ear. “Are you shocked, Guy?” she whispered. “Are you scandalized all the way down to your noble toes?”

To hell with not causing a scene. He pushed his chair back. Later he’d figure out how to apologize to Natalia.

Right now he had to get out of here.

I can only imagine the agony you were in when you wrote this; it's projected perfectly onto Guy. Poor Guy!

Of all the protagonists, I remember Anise as the only character who had the Bad Girl/Boy trait, and here it seems to have fully developed along with age and the changes that it brings... poor Guy.

As always, your portrayal of Physical Attraction--even painful attraction, dating all the way back to Touya and Tomoyo--, which is crucial to a good romance, is superb. I'm stealing the details about the ear curves and neck line and staring at the lips.

Their coming to agreement on the need to rescue Natalia, and the side track of dangerous attraction makes for an interesting dynamic.
