Comment to this post, and I will list seven things I want you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random.

Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

Mine come from sakuracorr

1. Most overrated current consumer trend

Cell phones, tablets, all that. I hate that you can’t go anywhere any more without having to listen to someone yakking away, blocking the aisle of the supermarket or distracting you in the middle of a film with their inane conversations. And I’m sorry, unless you’re a doctor on call or expecting an organ transplant, you do not need to have your cell phone sitting on the tabletop in a restaurant. It sends a very clear message that you are just completely bored with your dining companion and waiting for the first alternative you can get. We were in a nice restaurant for dinner (not super fancypants, but not Outback Steakhouse, either), and a family of three was sitting next to us. All three of them were on their various devices. This is what’s happened to basic human interaction. It’s completely deteriorated, and cell phone culture is making it worse every day.

Do we have cell phones? Yes. They are rarely turned on. When my car blew a tire on the interstate, I was damn glad to have it. When we’re driving the eight hours to my parents’ house, it’s nice to let them know we’re twenty minutes away so be ready for us. But that’s what we use them for. Emergencies, quick checking in, and that’s it.

2. If you could be on an island with a working television (got channels too) or a well-stock library, which would you rather have?

Um, does the TV get everything? Because this is going to make me sound terrible, but as much as I love books and reading, I think I’d rather have the TV. Also I’m one of those people who likes to fall asleep with the TV on. You can’t fall asleep with a book on. (Yes, I know, audio books, and I did do that when I had roommates in college. But it’s really uncomfortable trying to sleep in headphones.)

If I’m there forever, that is. If it’s like a week or a month or even a year, I could live without TV perfectly well, and I’d definitely go for the books. But if I’m there forever? TV.

3. Worst fanfiction trope

I try to be more forgiving about fic these days, probably because I don’t read nearly as much as I used to, and I don’t know if this is a “trope” per se, but it’s the thing that’s always bothered me the most.

“Hi, I want to write a fanfic! It looks fun, and lots of people review fics for Series A! I love Series A! Or at least I’ve heard of it! Oh, but writing is hard, and I don’t have any ideas. I know! I also love Series B! Or at least I’ve heard of it! I’ll put the characters from Series A into Series B! But that’s hard, too. So I’ll just transcribe the exact scenes and dialogue from Series B and paste the names from Series A into it! Oh, don’t forget to change the hair and eye colors, too! Yay, I wrote a fanfic! R&R plz! I need 20 reviews before I post the next chapter, even though if you read Series B, you know exactly what’s going to happen!”

I get it, writing is hard. Believe me, I get it. But it’s satisfying to know that even if you can’t come up with the characters and universe, you can still come up with an original plot line and witty things for them to say. These people, however, want all of the perks of writing fic (reviews, accolades, new friends) without any of the effort.

I get AU and crossovers. That’s not my problem. But when I made Tomoyo a Slayer, I didn’t just paste Tomoyo’s name and appearance over Buffy. I made Tomoyo a Slayer. When I sent the CCS characters to Hogwarts, I sent the CCS characters to Hogwarts (or at least the fanon versions of them). So it does piss me off that someone can’t even bother to do that much. I don’t even care if a fic is bad anymore. I just care if it’s lazy, and pasting names from one series directly over the names from another series is as lazy as it gets.

4. Music artist you think everyone should listen to at least once

Oh, man, there are so many people I love that I wish more people were into. And there are so many artists that I think everyone should be exposed to, to have a well-rounded appreciation for music. If you look at our music collection, you’ll find just about everything from standards to disco to new wave, from classical to doo-wop to punk.

But I’ll cop out a little bit here and post one of my very favorite songs that I wish more people knew, “Breakin Me” by Jonny Lang:

5. Which is better, cats or dogs?

Dogs. Dogs are the most easygoing and loyal and best friends a kid could have. They’ll run alongside as you ride your bike down the biggest hill on your street, chase you through the cornfields, drag you around in the snow by the sleeve of your winter coat, and overall be way more fun than any stupid stuck-up cat.

6. If you had to live somewhere else, what city would you choose?

If money was no object, London. I love it. The museums and the parks and the history. Plus I already sort of know the language, so that’s a bonus, and it’s a good home base for traveling all over Europe.

7. If you could time travel to one day in the past, what would you do with it?

Yeah, this is a hard one. I’d have to say, I’d be really curious to see how my mom met my father and what made her decide to marry him. It’s a conundrum for the ages. Even she doesn’t seem to know why she did. And I was so young when they divorced that my memories from back then are really only about specific little things, and I have no actual memory of their relationship. So that’s a weird thing to say when you could go see anything and anyone in history, but yeah, as long as I don’t break everything like Marty McFly, it would be interesting to be a fly on that wall.

Rip fic: You know, that never occurred to me, take characters and put them in the plot of another series. Very inane.

Yes, the smart mobile device has some worrying consequences.

It's like no one knows how to be bored anymore. (Says the girl who keeps a book in her purse. But I don't whip it out on dates!)

Humanity is losing its innate ability to space out.

Give me seven things you want me to talk about!
mellowcandle From: mellowcandle Date: March 4th, 2012 04:04 pm (UTC) (Link)
1. How many states have you visited? Where haven’t you been that you’d like to see?

2. What recipe do you enjoy cooking the most, or could be considered your “specialty”?

3. Congratulations, you’re the newest drinking game! What three things do you do/say often enough that makes everyone have to “DRINK!”?

4. Lawyer jokes—-hilarious or not funny at all? Do you have a favorite?

5. What fandom do you want to join or write for but just can’t seem to get started?

6. Everybody has things they want to do “someday”. What do you know for sure that you never, ever want to do, and no one can make you?

7. What was your favorite age to be? What age are you looking forward to being?

It's okay to want the television! And interesting choice on time travel!

Hehe, I'm really defensive about the TV, aren't I?

Do you want some more topics too? I found these great for procrastinating!

I get it. Culturally, people put more emphasis on liking books, even though most of us watch more television.

Sure, it's fun!
