I don't know if I'm going to make it to fifty this year. Four books in August.

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
The Year of Yes by Maria Dahvana Headley
Heir Apparent by Vivian Vande Velde
The Orchid Affair by Lauren Willig

I don't know why I read Year of Yes; it was a bargain-table pick-up that sounded interesting, but I didn't even get past the first chapter before I hated this woman and wanted a bad ending for her, but because it was supposedly a memoir, I figured that wouldn't happen. Can you get VD from a book? It was just trashy and gross. And you know how in fiction, you have to feel like the ending makes sense and is earned, but with a memoir, since it's "real", the ending can just be total crap and make you feel like you wasted your time. I don't often finish books I don't like, because life is short, but it was a trainwreck that I had to see to the end. Yuck. This one's going up on PBS.

And Orchid is the last of Willig's books that I'd bought. I don't know if I'm going to continue with this series. I still hate Eloise, surprise surprise, and think the framing story would be so much more interesting if I could see Colin and Serena dealing with their weird family shit, instead of it all being filtered through a perfect stranger who CAN'T EVEN GET HER POP CULTURE REFERENCES RIGHT. Don't do it if you're going to screw it up!
