a good start?
Four books for January:

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente
Reached by Ally Condie
Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dark by Ridley Pearson and Tristan Elwell
The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde

I don't think there are words for how disappointed I was in the end of the Matched series. It was just so... dull. I was expecting some grand takedown of the Society, all sorts of infiltration and subterfuge, and instead it read like, "Look at all this research I did about drug testing!" I mean, really? This was the grand plan and the grand solution? Geez, what a snore. And I didn't like the cutting between three different first-person narrators. I'm over first-person as a device anyway, but if you're going to have three different characters narrating, for the love of God, give them distinct voices. Often I had to look at the top of the page to remember which character was talking.

The Disney book I read because my dad gave it to me for Christmas. Apparently everyone in my family is hooked on this series and thought for sure I would be, too. Yikes. I know it's a kids' book and everything, but it was so poorly written I could barely get through it. I only finished it in case they asked me, but I won't be going on to the next ones. It's an idea that could be interesting in the hands of a capable writer, but it was so slapdash. The dialogue was wooden, the characters barely formed, and the plotting WTF.

And to show how kids' books can be done well, I really enjoyed Dragonslayer. But has he decided not to follow up on Shades of Grey? That was the world of his I was most intrigued by once the Thursday Next series started getting bogged down in its "real world" problems instead of travel around the BookWorld.

Oh, I didn't say anything about the first book, which I also liked a lot more than I expected to, and I'm looking forward to checking out the sequel. I've got a huge stack of other things to work through first.

Aoife_Hime just finished the Ally Condie trilogy as well. Same reaction as yours. Great #1, mreh #2 and 3. Should I read this?

I can't say I'd give it a hearty recommendation, but read the summary and see if the plot's something you'd be interested in.
