Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather, because I was all set to declare Before Midnight my favorite movie of the summer. I know! After I hated the last one! It was so weird, because Before Sunrise is just so gorgeous and romantic and talky, and then I was so let down by Before Sunset that I never saw it again (and wrote a huge rant about it here at the time), but I remember thinking both of them were cowards and the architects of their own unhappiness. But I had to know, didn't I, what happened next, because I do love me some talky movies, even if the characters had become unsympathetic. And then what do you know, but not only did this movie pull the series out of a nosedive, but I was 90% on Jesse's side throughout. I felt like he made all these changes and was trying, and Celine was just this psycho bitch who had no respect for him or his work, while she was some sort of martyr, and I love that he called her on her bullshit with his "Yeah, poor oppressed you, growing up in middle-class Paris" comment. She's fighting battles that don't need to be fought. Get down from the cross, we need the wood, you know? (Which really just proves, if you ever spend one romantic night in a foreign city with a stranger, just let it be! Don't ever, ever make it more than that!)

So yeah, I was all ready to call it, and then last weekend we saw The Way Way Back, and I might have to declare it a tie, or at least, very very close. I loved how it so captured the feel of an 80s movie without actually being an 80s movie. Man, I miss the 80s.

So final rundown of summer movies from best to worst:

Before Midnight
The Way Way Back
The Heat
Despicable Me 2
Iron Man 3
Chennai Express
The Hangover Part III
Man of Steel
Star Trek Into Darkness
The Wolverine

I think that's everything we saw. If I forgot one, well, that kind of says it all, doesn't it?
