Three books for August:

The Heartbreakers by Ali Novak
The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith
Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

Hermine is headed straight for us, but we had to run out to Costco to pick up my glasses. While there, we saw lots of people buying water and flashlights and stuff, but one guy had a case of wine. I want to be stranded with that guy! He knows how to hurricane!

On the news the gov is like, have three days worth of food just in case. Um, if nothing else, I'm gonna lose some weight if the power goes out for three days.

Stay safe! And though it may sound weird saying this, have fun! We had tons of typhoons in Taiwan growing up, and as a kid, it was pretty novel and exciting, staying home with candles, using flashlights, figuring out how to heat water for instant noodles... and afterwards, once the weather settled, heading out to eat was always great.

Florida can't catch a break though: Head-shrinking mosquitoes, typhoons (maybe it'll wipe out the mosquitoes?), and algae blooms.

I'm just glad we had water. The power was out long enough that by the end of the day, the house started getting really stuffy and we opened the windows when we went to bed. We were woken up a few hours later by the AC coming on, hallelujah! We had to throw out almost everything in the fridge, but the all-important booze survived.

The mosquitoes are awful. No power meant our pool pump didn't run, which meant we had a big ole hole of standing water to attract them. I got eat up bad while cleaning up the yard these last couple days. I swear this yard will be death of me one way or another.

Yikes. Sounds like it could have been much worse though.

Just when you need the frogs...

Yeah, it wasn't too bad, for us anyway. A lot of the city is still out of power and people are pissed that it's taking so long--esp after our mayor bragged about how prepared we were last week, but for us it was comparable to what we went thru in Alabama with Katrina (out for 19 hours) and the tornadoes (out for 30 hours).

I don't know where the frogs went! It's weird!

I've never been through a hurricane before - good luck! How did your interview go on Wednesday? If you don't want to jinx anything, you don't have to respond, but I was thinking about you and wishing you luck.

Interview went okay, I think. I didn't sleep much the night before and only got thru it by coffee and the grace of God. Each one is good practice until something pays off, anyway. Thanks for thinking of me!

And we were lucky with the hurricane, all things considered. Our power was *only* out for 26 hours (lots of people are still waiting) and no damage to the house, although the yard was a mess.
